Shire locals know the Vinyl Room at Gymea is one of the only places in the shire to dance late night.
So when my bestie and I got a night off from the kids and were both in a great mental health space after some tougher times we wanted (and deserved) a night out on the town.
We wanted to drink, we wanted to dance and we wanted to feel young again!!!
After some excellent tunes at Gymea Pub we hit the Vinyl Room line to wait to get in.
Upon arrival we did not feel young again, quite the opposite. There was an 18 year old Facetiming his “partner” in Russia, a 19 year old talking about her “first time” and an altercation between two women over who knows what.
Then we got inside. We were the oldest by a decade, maybe two. But you know what? We didn’t care.
There was a spot on the dance floor and that’s all that mattered.
We had a giggle about the fact that we were now the Vinyl Room ‘grannies’ and we were proud baby.
We acted like 16 year olds again – when she was a girl scout and I was a girl guide and life was carefree, easy and we adored ourselves!!!!
And then something really unique and beautiful happened.
We went to the bathroom.
We witnessed two young women talking to each other about how amazing a girl looked, one who was upset because she was bigger than her friends.
We witnessed two girls having a conversation about how silly their friend is for taking drugs, but they both decided she was doing it to escape reality because of challenges at home and that they were going to ask her to see a councillor at school on Monday.
And then there was one girl who looked at us and said ‘you guys look like you’re having a good night’ and we said ‘yes we are – away from the kids and having a ball’ and she said ‘I can’t wait to be a mum it looks like the best thing in the world’, to which we replied ‘yeah it is – apart from the breasts disappearing – we wish we still had your puppies’.
So, you know what, we are Vinyl room grannies and proud of it!!!! And we are excited to teach our girls self confidence, self love and self acceptance.
But maybe, it might be nice to have any option to dance where the line doesn’t reach around the block and we don’t have to wait 15 mins for a drink. Is there anywhere else to dance in the shire?
